On Names and Numbers: How To Become The Best In The World At What You Do.

So I ask

Whenever your name is mentioned.

What is that one thing that you want people to think about?

What do you want their minds to go to?

The biggest personal brands that we know today have certain thoughts that they evoke when mentioned in public.

Satoshi, Elon, Ronaldo……Buhari

There are so many things that you can be known for in this day and age.

And as you read this, your brain probably points to a particular thing.

But even if, at this point, there is nothing that you can lay your mind on, don’t worry.

Read On.

You see, as an online educator, I have been able to teach a lot of people different things over the past five years, and there is one thing that I am sure of.

The current design of the world makes it okay for you to be a number instead of a name.

So what does it mean to be a name?

And what does it mean to be a number?

At the beginning of this article.

I wrote out some names, and depending on your level of knowledge, I believe you would know who most or all of those people are.

I mean, who doesn’t know Buhari?

You didn’t need to think twice before knowing who they were.

You knew.

The best place that you want to be in life is at a place where at the mere mention of your name, people instantly know who you are and what you stand for.

As Humans, we have come up with things that we use to group ourselves

Academia: et al

Social Media: Mr. A is with xxx others

Business: Okafor and Sons

It always seems like there is limited room for everyone to shine.

But that is not how the real world works.

World-Renowned Philosopher and Actress Funke Akindele was one of the people that helped me understand the significance of this saying early.

The sky is big enough for every bird to fly

But before I proceed, let me clarify something.

The sky is big enough doesn’t mean that you shouldn’t serve.

Without service, you can never rise to the top of your field.

There is a time for learning, incubation, mentorship and service.

Choosing to declare independence prematurely will always come back to haunt you.

With that, we get to the central point of today’s message.

Your goal should be to become the best in the world at what you do, Keep redefining what you do until this is true.

Five years ago, if you had asked me what I did.

I would have told you that I am a content developer.

Same question Four years ago would have brought a different answer.

I would have told you that I was a Community Manager/ Online Educator

If you had asked Three years ago, I would have told you that I am a Growth Hacker.

The difference between these careers was the amount of skill I had each time.

But no matter how skilled I am now and how skilled I get in the future my foundational skills would always determine what I get

Things like Curiosity, Pattern Recognition and Action.

Curiosity is what fuels every single skill or knowledge that I have now.

It is something that I urge you to build.

Seek and you shall always find.

The traditional educational system has taught us that we need credentials to stake out a claim to significance in this world.

And there is nothing wrong with credentials, I have some and I am still chasing some.

However, you need to understand that things have changed.

And in the words of my Mentor.

The Jobs of the Future won’t be taught in schools.

When I say that you need to be the best in the world at what you do, you need to realize something, no career would help you attain that.

Your purpose is what would.

I am someone that believes that everyone on Earth has a purpose and it is in finding that purpose that you would truly find out what you are meant to be the best at.

Elon Musk plans to build Rockets that take Humans to Mars.

That’s a very lofty goal that has been laughed at for years, but as time goes on we are seeing him getting nearer to his goal.

No school on Earth teaches a degree on how to Colonize Mars.

What we are seeing is one Man harnessing everything natural and man-made that is available to him to achieve his goal.

He isn’t the only one building Rockets, but he needs no Introduction.

Also, not everyone would be known on a global scale like Elon.

I have found out that the size of our dreams always determines the size of our world.

And also, getting to global significance is a journey that takes decades.

Elon didn’t start today. He is currently in his early Fifties.

No matter where you are now, there is one question that you need to ask yourself.

Do my daily actions match the actions of a world builder.

The things that you did today, are they Net Positive or Negative?

If someone watched your life today like a movie, would they be able to predict who you are and where you would be in let’s say five years?

Also, the purpose of this post is not to motivate you.

I have found out that the people of this current generation have sold themselves mediocre dreams.

So when you try to make them understand that they can be much better, they fight you.

The worst thing that you can be is a willing prisoner of circumstance who doesn’t believe that greatness is within reach.

No matter how worse things are for you.

There are people that had less that were able to make something that made the world standstill.

But still, I am not here to motivate you.

Words are the cheapest form of motivation.

The best kind of motivation is that which comes from taking action.

As you act and see results, you get energized to push further and aim much higher.

Becoming the best in the world at what you do is not child’s play.

It takes dedication to study and personal development.

We live in a time when people think they only need to study in preparation for an exam.

Any reading that doesn’t come with exams doesn’t seem valuable to them.

You need to wake up if you are in that category.

Today is November 1st.

How many books have you read this year?

How many blog posts have you read?

This is probably the first blog post you are committing to reading this year.

We live in a time and age where information is abundant.

However, what’s lacking is the will to study.

When you created your Instagram or Twitter account, you probably listed many things in your bio.

And depending on your pace of growth, the things in your bio have changed with time.

Bios on social media are what we use to signal to the world who we are.

“I have achieved this and that, so you better put some respect on my name.”

However, the ultimate bios are not what Mark and Jack made room for us to update.

You need to get to that point where you become increasingly better and better at what you do.

With time your bio will get shorter and shorter as you build and cement your place in this world.

Until one day.

Only your name will be enough.

So go on.

Start something today.

  3. This is deep. NO career would help you attack being the best at what you do, it’s realizing your purpose that will.

The question I guess I should be finding answers to now is, what’s my purpose on earth? How do I discover it? and ensure am not just a number but a name.

  7. Thank you sir for this article.

I also believe strongly that everyone got an assignment (purpose) for being here on earth.
It’s only in working in your purpose that true fulfillment in life is found not in career.
I have read and listened to a lot on purpose but this one hit differently, just like your other articles.

Thank you once again sir for this piece.
    I’m grateful.
